Vineyard Haven Home
Martha's Vineyard, MA - 2024
Set along the shoreline of Vineyard Haven, this ground-up waterfront residence replaces an outdated, inefficient cottage with a modern retreat designed around connection and gathering. Built to accommodate multi-generational hosting, the home prioritizes open circulation and a seamless flow between interior living areas and the natural landscape outside. The layout centers around an expansive main living space—anchored by a full-width, foldable glass wall—that frames sweeping panoramic views of the water while creating an inviting atmosphere for both quiet mornings and lively evening gatherings.
Harmonizing these expansive views with environmental performance required solving a critical site challenge: the main water-facing facade originally oriented directly into the harsh, low-angled western sun. To protect the home from excessive heat gain and late-afternoon glare without sacrificing sightlines, a detailed solar study was conducted. The findings led to a decisive design adaptation: shifting the building’s footprint further up the hillside and rotating its axis slightly to the North. This precise repositioning sheltered the glass wall during peak solar intensity while simultaneously optimizing the visual angle across the bay.
By anchoring aesthetic decisions in rigorous environmental analysis, the home achieves a rare balance between dramatic openness and quiet thermal comfort. As the sun sets over the water, the reoriented geometry transforms potential glare into a warm illumination that fills the interior. The finished residence stands as a composed synthesis of site strategy and lifestyle—proving that thoughtful orientation, subtle geometric shifts, and technical precision can elevate a coastal home into a functional, enduring sanctuary.
